Acceptance Commitment Therapy

What is Acceptance Commitment Therapy?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a practical, evidence-based approach that helps people create a richer, more meaningful life — even when difficult thoughts, emotions, or circumstances are present.

Many of us naturally try to avoid pain. We push away anxiety, criticize ourselves for feeling sad, overthink our worries, or wait until we feel better before taking action. While these strategies often make sense, they can sometimes leave us feeling stuck, disconnected, or living smaller lives than we want to.

What Makes ACT Unique

ACT offers a different path. Rather than focusing on eliminating difficult thoughts and feelings, ACT helps us develop a new relationship with them. Through therapy, you’ll learn skills for making space for uncomfortable emotions, stepping back from unhelpful thought patterns, and becoming more present in your daily life. The goal isn’t to ‘think positive’ or pretend things aren’t hard. Instead, it’s about building the flexibility to carry life’s challenges while continuing to move toward what matters most to you.

A central part of ACT is identifying your values — the qualities and ways of being that give your life meaning. Values might include connection, courage, creativity, adventure, kindness, authenticity, or growth. Once we clarify what truly matters to you, we can begin making choices that move you toward the life you want, even when fear, self-doubt, anxiety, or painful memories show up along the way.

ACT in Session

In our sessions, ACT often looks less like analyzing problems and more like developing practical skills and new perspectives. We might use mindfulness exercises, experiential activities, metaphors, and gentle curiosity to explore how you relate to your inner experiences. Together, we’ll notice the patterns that keep you stuck and strengthen your ability to respond to challenges in ways that align with your values.

ACT can be helpful for anxiety, depression, perfectionism, stress, life transitions, trauma recovery, relationship difficulties, ADHD, and many other concerns. At its heart, however, ACT is not about symptom reduction alone. It is about helping you build a life that feels meaningful, connected, and authentically yours.
